Best migration destinations for 2014

With studies, reviews, surveys and media reports all suggesting different takes on the best places for a successful move overseas, how can potential expats decide?

One thing’s for sure, there’s more discontent with the state of most Western first-world countries than ever before, with politics, soaring costs of living and increasing encroachments on personal freedom largely to blame. For Brits desperate to leave, the sudden deterioration in the already miserable weather is due to be a major factor in 2014.

One of the more, but not much more, reliable studies is HSBC’s Expat Explorer survey, noting the opinions of a larger than usual sector of the world-wide expat community. This year, five of their top-rated expat havens were found in Asia.

The survey’s criteria included raising children, economics, quality of life, cost of living and higher salaries although, given the rise in the number of retirees moving overseas, this sector wasn’t that well covered. China, mostly a destination for expat workers on contracts, unsurprisingly scored well in economics, but less well in childcare.

Thailand was rated as the best place to reinvent oneself, with apparently 76 per cent of local respondents praising its social life. Of course, recent and still ongoing political troubles, demonstrations and difficulties with visa requirements weren’t given any space, and the social lifestyle may not suit many people, especially older couples.

For those with a job to go to and a family to bring with them, Singapore is best in Asia for raising children, although the tiny state is described as sterile by many. The wild, lovely land of Indonesia rated highly for wages and an affordable lifestyle, but again concentrated on expat employees on contract.

Given that a major international bank conducted the survey, that’s hardly surprising. India is more a unique adventure than an expat destination, with its culture an unforgettable experience for its colour and vibrancy. Of all the above, it’s the best for stepping out of your comfort zone.
