For the majority of expats, advancing their careers via an overseas assignment is even more important than a better lifestyle and increased salary.

It’s well known that a successful stint overseas is a great way to spice up the average expat CV when applying for a new job, especially if one or two promotions have been had during the duration of the original contract. Nowadays, competition for the top overseas jobs is even fiercer, especially as the Gulf States proceed still further with their nationalisation edicts.

A recent survey identified the planet’s top destinations for career success, with Luxembourg an ever popular top choice for just under 70 per cent of respondents and even higher scores for the small country’s lifestyle and job security. Taiwan, a newcomer to the listings, also did well by hitting the number two spot in its first entry into the survey. Again, almost all expats surveyed were more than happy with both job security and the job itself.

Germany scored an unsurprising third place, with 66 per cent pleased with their career prospects and a similar number were happy with the work/life balance and the job itself. Up and coming countries in the ‘best job’ states included Romania, Hungary and India, all of which were praised for their career opportunities and job satisfaction. On the way out were Mozembique for its almost total lack of career enhancement, Ecuador for similar reasons and Qatar for its unenviable position as the target of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain, a blockade which is still unresolved some two years later.
