The best way to avoid the effect of the coronavirus on your career is to know which countries are hiring your speciality and which companies are likely to ride out the crisis.

For some time now, the Czech Republic has been gaining expat favour as a destination to take seriously as regards career advancement. Obviously, some sectors have been harder hit than others by the pandemic, with the hospitality trade in all its forms perhaps the worst affected. It’s the same in Prague as in the rest of the world, with the lack of tourist dollars now significant.

For expats in other sectors, recession-proofing the present career is an alternative to heading out on a new venture. Nowadays, those used to jobs in tourism are being forced to move into other sectors, with e-commerce, logistics and business services including customer care all good choices, especially for expats with more than one language. For English teachers now out of regular work in the republic, switching to online teaching can work well, thus saving the wolf of financial insecurity from knocking down the door.

For expats with flexible talents, Prague and the republic can still offer paid work in the afore- mentioned sectors as well as in the construction and pharmaceutical industries. Those proficient in tech and telecommunications will still be able to get jobs, as all IT positions are independent of location. Many will find it easier as well as more economical and safer to work from home in this sector, especially as the recruitment industry is beginning to wake up and take notice of the changing norms.
