Andalusia multinational culture draws expats from across Europe

British expats looking for a truly international ambience should head for the Costa del Sol.

Multiculturalism has its benefits for would-be expats looking to be part of the world rather than just the country of their birth. This ever-popular region of Spain is peopled by expats from across the planet, giving an almost uniquely diverse culture. Especially popular with holiday home owners, its stunning beaches, historic landmarks and sheer scenic beauty attract those searching for a holiday home as well as those seeking the perfect retirement destination, with one third of Andalusian properties in 2017 sold to ‘residential tourists’.

Since the Brexit referendum’s devastating result, fewer Britons have taken the plunge and bought homes in the region, but UK citizens still make up the majority of property purchasers. Swedes, Belgians, Germans, French and even Russian buyers have taken up the slack and are now happily ensconced in the Costa del Sol’s many resorts, with Marbella also welcoming seeing Middle Eastern tourists showing interest in property purchase. It’s not just foreign buyers who’re flocking to the region, as the Spanish themselves are buying homes in the south, buoyed up by increasing prosperity and cash accumulated by working overseas for a time.

Younger Spaniards who’ve been living and working overseas are now flocking back to their roots and settling down with their families after deciding to contribute to the home country’s economic recovery. In general, it’s Europeans who're deciding the Costa-del Sol is for them after falling in love with the authentic Andalusian atmosphere, the mostly sunny weather and the mix of nationalities now living along its spectacular coastline.
