Expats in the UK happy with their new lifestyles

A recent survey of expats who’ve arrived in the UK over the past five years has revealed surprising results.

A survey involving expatriates in the UK has come up with some surprising opinions on their new lives, and especially on the notorious British weather. Apparently, life in the UK is far better than was expected as regards friendly locals, and the weather wasn’t as bad as was predicted. Over 90 per cent of respondents reported positively about their experiences, with some overwhelmed by the reality of living in the UK. Many praised the intelligence, attractiveness and work ethics of the Brits they’d come into contact with, although an equal number weren’t happy about British food and public transport.

Over 50 per cent of those surveyed said the British weather wasn’t nearly as bad as they’d been expecting, although this last summer’s heatwave may well have coloured their positive experiences. Just under 39 per cent reported it was worse than expected and a further 4.6 per cent said it was more or less what they’d thought it would be. Entertainment and nightlife drew praise from the vast majority, with only a few saying they were disappointed with the various offerings. British humour was another factor which found appreciation from newly arrived incomers, with 45 per cent of those surveyed saying it was better than they’d expected and just 38 per cent saying they were not at all impressed or amused.

Generally speaking, Britons should be happy that so many incomers had a positive impression of their new country of residence, as the vast majority came from comparable first-world countries including the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Most of those surveyed also said they’d be sorry to leave once their time in the UK was up. It’s possible the shared heritage and culture of the new arrivals influenced their experiences of UK life, and all had sizeable expat communities as support networks when they first arrived.
