Expat job seekers find great choices in the Czech Republic

If Prague or another Czech city sounds attractive, there are plenty of jobs available in several sectors.

Although the Czech Republic may not immediately spring to mind as the ideal destination for expats looking for overseas jobs, it’s got one important thing going for it – the number of jobs available. According to local recruitment agencies, qualified foreign employees shouldn’t have difficulty finding a job to suit their qualifications and talent.

The country’s current unemployment numbers total 223,000, as against some 300,000 jobs waiting to be filled. Production jobs suitable for quality control experts and plant operation specialists and easily found, but the strongest demand is seen in the technology sector. Most needed are engineering staff and experienced IT professionals, with many jobs not requiring a strong command of the Czech language. Oddly enough, English and Czech aren’t the most sought-after languages in the country’s jobs market. Positions include developers and technical support experts as well as help desk staff and engineers with experience in quality assurance.

Other sectors experiencing skills shortages include business centres located all across the country, with speaking the local language not a requirement. However, applicants should have two languages, with English linked with a working knowledge of French, German, Dutch, Finnish or Italian. Applicants from different professional backgrounds such as IT, logistics, human resources and finance are all accepted for these positions.

Living in Prague has its advantages, including a refreshingly low cost of living and a host of friendly locals. Admittedly, its winters are freezing cold, but the social scene in the city is varied and vibrant and gastronomes will adore the food. Kafka once described the city as a ‘little old lady with claws who won’t let go once she’s got you’ – a good way of expressing delight in its glorious, historic architecture and international vibe.
