Vietnam now popular with adventurous expatriates

In recent years, Vietnam has become a favourite destination for expatriates fascinated by all things Asian.

Formerly known only for its devastating war and the poverty of its peoples, Vietnam has now shrugged off its troubled past and is becoming one of Southeast Asia’s expat favourites. With its great weather, refreshingly low cost of living, steadily improving infrastructure and fascinating history and culture, the relatively small country is now home to a thriving expat community. Downsides include pollution in the capital, traffic congestion and road safety in general, but the low cost of living plus a little care and attention more than makes up for the disadvantages.

Hanoi was placed at 136th in the current Mercers’ cost of living survey, suggesting expats can live comfortably on a pension or low wages, especially if they shop and live like the locals. As with the rest of Southeast Asia, western foods come at a high cost, but the local cuisine is healthy and delicious as well as amazingly cheap. Wine is expensive, but beer is cheap and good. As regards well-paid jobs, they’re rare, but expats with previous experience have been known to land suitable positions in fields related to international development not-for-profit organisations. Teaching jobs are found all across the region, and tech expertise is much in demand.

Expat retirees are gradually realising Vietnam’s advantages as regards the cost of living, the culture and the country’s friendly people. Although land ownership by foreigners isn’t allowed, 50-year leases on land can be had, and builds are inexpensive compared with the West. New arrivals may find the currency confusing, as paying in US dollars is required for luxury items and the Vietnamese Dong is used for everyday purchases. The country’s beach towns are perfect for expat retirees, and digital nomads in particular are attracted to the laid-back lifestyle. Getting a long-stay visa as a retiree is easier than for those wishing to work legally, but older expats should note the quality of healthcare leaves a lot to be desired, especially outside Ho Chi Minh City.
