Increasing EU migration fuelled by Eurozone crisis

The ever-increasing number of EU citizens migrating in search of work is a major indication that not enough is being done to solve the monetary crisis in the Eurozone, according to officials.

The analysis has been prompted by scaremongering reports about huge numbers of migrants from Bulgaria and Romania arriving in other EU states after free-movement restrictions were lifted on 1 January. However, the issue brought into focus the equally large numbers of migrants fleeing smaller EU countries such as Ireland because of severe economic problems, soaring costs of living and high unemployment.

According to EU Employment Commissioner Laszlo Andor, the controversy over the influx of Romanians and Bulgarians will likely die down after the expected hordes fail to arrive. He added that the problem of increasing migration of qualified and professional workers needs to be urgently addressed.

The commissioner has previously warned that both workers and entrepreneurs are being harmed by the unsuccessful austerity-driven solutions to the crisis which have only increased inequality and slowed down the EU’s recovery. He recommends that reform of the Eurozone is essential in order to avoid a complete breakdown due to political conflict between the losers and winners.
