Emigrating to Malta

Emigrating to Malta
Going to Malta is not all that easy. You could only be admitted to the Malta territory, especially through its external borders, if you are a third-country national. However, it is not just enough that you are third-country national, you must also be seeking entry through a crossing point at its borders. You should possess a valid passport or a travel document equivalent to the passport as well as documents substantiating the purpose and conditions of your Malta visit.

If you hold a residence permit that was issued by one of the member states of the European Union, then you will be exempted from presenting these documents. Should you require it, you should also need a valid entry or transit visa to be able to visit Malta.

If you want to gain entry into Malta because you want to work and live there, then you must get work and residence permits. In this country, work permits come in the form of employment licenses which are obtained by employers who wish to hire foreigners for a particular post and only for a specific period of time. However, the employer must also prove that all efforts have been taken to find a Maltese worker for the vacancy, to no avail. While employment licenses are only valid for a year, there are licenses that are valid for a maximum of three years that can be obtained upon the request of the employer. License renewals can also be secured but only after justification of their requests has been done.

Once you have obtained a work permit in Malta, then it automatically follows that you will also get a residence permit that also covers your spouse or dependents. However, this does not mean that they can qualify for employment licenses. An exemption would be made when there is a demand for their expertise which no Maltese worker can fill.
