Over 60 migrants discovered on a berm on Greece-Turkey border

On Friday, Greek border police said that they came to the rescue of 68 migrants on the Greek-Turkish border after they became stranded on a berm whilst they tried to cross illegally into Greece. Most of the people rescued originated from Syria.

Some 14 children and seven women were amongst the migrants who were stranded after trying to cross the Evros River, which divides the two countries. Due to heavy rainfall over previous days, the Greek fields on the other side of the river were severely flooded. After one of the migrants called the Greek emergency services, the group was discovered before dawn on Friday.

Authorities said that the migrants had been deserted by the smuggler who was facilitating their journey and that in order to rescue the group, the police had to use inflatable dinghies to reach them. The police later told authorities that when the migrants were on the Turkish side they were put into 10 inflatable dinghies however the current took them to the berm. When the migrants were found, they were wet and suffering from cold. They were then escorted to a nearby holding centre where they were provided with food, clothing and shoes.
