Haringey Council Employed Illegal Emigrants
Haringey Council Employed Illegal Emigrants
Figures revealed that the authorities have hired 35 illegal emigrants since 2006. Half of them where employed in the traffic department. Despite these high numbers, the authorities do claim that they hired these emigrants unwittingly.
This information, which was revealed using the Freedom of Information legislation, showed that Haringey Council had hired more illegal emigrants than any other local authority in all of the UK. The illegal emigrants are defined as employees that were later discovered to have not entered the country legally.
Two of these employees had been working with the disabled and elderly residents. The Conservative Party candidate for Hornsey and Wood Green, Richard Merrin, said that he cannot believe that the procedures at Haringey are so lax that illegal emigrants can just walk in and get jobs looking after some of the weakest in the society. He went on to say that this is just yet another example of why the Labor group is unfit to run the borough.
Employers are suppose to check and take copies of identity documents from foreign workers before offering them a job. Failure to do so can result in fines of up to £10,000. A Haringey Council spokeswoman did come out to say that they have stepped up the number of checks that it does on documents. She went on to say that, in all cases, they took the correct action of dismissal when illegal status became known. They did continue to be vigilant and work closely with other agencies to identify any future cases.
