Asylum Seeker Attempts to Escape Britain for 6 Years
Rashid Ali, who is a 31-year-old Moroccan, has tried many things over the past six years to leave the county. This includes trying to stow himself away on cargo ships. Reports suggest that he has done this six times. Although, 12 months ago, a judge vowed to get him deported, the asylum seeker remains stuck in the system.
Right now Rashid Ali is being held in a detention center. This is a stay that is costing taxpayers in Britain close to £100 a night. This is a lot of money to spend on someone that does not want to be in the UK in the first place.
Emigration officials say that they will not send him home until he produces his passport. This is because authorities in his native country will not allow him in without proof that he is one of their citizens. So the simple fix would be for Ali to show his passport and get a ride home. However, Ali ripped up his passport and identity papers after arriving in Britain back in 2004. He did this, because he thought that he would have a better chance of gaining asylum if he pretend to be Algerian.
Right now officials are still trying to get Moroccan authorities to take the man back. However, it seems like there is little chance that Ali will ever get to leave. This little saga has already cost the public £300,000.
