Visas come easy for models in the US
An United States Congressman is try to push through new work permits for the US that would allow special visas for fashion models from foreign countries. The congressman from New York has personally been involved with many high profile beautiful woman in his own private life. A forty three year old bachelor, Anthony Weiner is suggesting new laws that would provide models from foreign countries to fall into a separate visa category instead of forcing them to go against scientists or computer programmers in the category they are currently in for H-1B which is a visa for skilled professionals.
Weiner commented on his support of the new category, “From Fashion Week to our vibrant publishing industry to the many designers that call New York City home, fashion is a vital part of our economy that drives thousands of jobs.” His visa proposal was brought up to the House toward the end of last year but at this point was not scheduled for consideration. The visa amendments would change the Immigration and Nationality Act in order to create the new category specifically for models. If passed, it will have a limitation to the amount of visas issued at one thousand each year.
With the United States fashion relies sixty percent of all its business on foreign models the bill has much support from those involved with the industry especially considering only a couple of years ago there were 800 visas issued to foreign models but as of last year the number had dwindled to 349.
