Indian Emigrants in the UK Now Demand Dual Citizenship for Home Country

Apparently, just a few days after writing a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding dual citizenship, Indian skilled emigrants that are already living in the UK have launched campaigns for dual citizenship in India. Highly Skilled Emigrants Forum and Association of Emigrants representing a big number of Indian emigrants having permanent residency and British citizenships said in a statement that Indian emigrants in the UK believe that it is unfair on the Indian government's part to deprive them of dual citizenship.

In a statement that was sent to Dr Singh, the Indians said that they cherished their Indian identity and wanted to retain it. A large number of Indian emigrants, including some who are doctors, engineers and scientists who have settled in the UK, have now lashed out against the government's irrational policy of single citizenship. A UH General Physician from Orissa, Dr Amaresh Swaro, who has actually successfully obtained foreign citizenship, said that he wishes to retain his pride as an Indian citizen. He said that dual nationality gives him a sense of belonging to his home country, as well as his adopted country.

However, some people believe that dual citizenship is a bad and dangerous move, because it could lead to conflicting loyalties. For example, if there were ever issues between the UK and India, and an emigrant had dual citizenship, how would they be treated? On top of this, who would this person, who belongs to both nations, choose to side with? Would they become a security threat? These are all questions that a lot of experts want answers to, and one problem that the Indian government may have with dual citizenship.
