As a result of the attacks on 9/11, the Federal Bureau of Investigations in the United States has fallen behind in their background reviews for immigrants who are attempting to move to the US or receive citizenship. The results of this backlog of work has caused many thousands stranded waiting to hear back from their applications filed with the FBI. The reasons cited for the delay and backlog according to the Justice Department was that the application used to complete the name verification was outdated in addition to the fact that training standards were well below what they should have been causing various inefficiencies in the process. An internal review of the process found that as of the first quarter of this year, there are 327,000 applications for verifications behind schedule. Those whose applications are sitting in the large backlog could have been waiting for up to three years for a response.
The FBI’s public affairs head, John Miller commented regarding the backlog, “This unexpected deluge of immigration related name checks overwhelmed existing resources.’ Miller also mentioned that the FBI plans to implement all of the suggestions coming from the internal investigation as well as work harder to try and clear the backlog as quickly as possible. The application that is used to complete the verifications as well as the fingerprint database is the largest of its kind in the entire world. The application and database contains fingerprints as well as histories of more than fifty million.
