US government contractors to use new system
On Monday, a new order issued from President Bush has required all federal contractors to be involved in the Department of Homeland Securities new system which can confirm the immigration standings of their employees. This will help to increase the strength and effectiveness of the administrations policies involving employers who have employed illegal immigrant. The E-Verify system will be used by all federal contractors when they have a new employee start a job for the government or at the time of hire.
The scope of the impact of the new executive order is expected to affect over a hundred thousand employees across the country each year. The E-Verify application pulls its information from the social security database when a federal contactor checks to see on the status of a new hire. This system has come under some scrutiny as many proponents for immigration have felt the social security database contains flaws and errors that have resulted in many employees being let go from their employers. The application has been available since 1996 when it was created by Congress. At that time it was available for use on a voluntary basis, this new executive order will be the first time it was become required for any group of employers. The new order has received praise from those in favor of reducing immigration, Rosemary Jenks who is the director of government relations for NumbersUSA commented. “This is the first time the federal government is ensuring that it will not be responsible, directly or indirectly, for hiring illegal aliens.”
