Top tips for homesick expats
Relocating to another country can be a daunting experience for some but can also be filled with the thoughts of things left behind. Unsurprisingly, the weather did not rate high on the miss list.
If one sentence could be used to sum up what expats miss most then it would include thick cut white bread with Marmite along with a decent ale in the lounge of a John Lewis themed home.
The best part of being abroad was generally breathtaking water views, wonderful food, flourishing culture and a slower pace of life. However, the survey found that once the honeymoon period was over many of the novelty charms that were once so attractive become mundane and even frustrating. These are topped by language, law, religion and weather. Getting over the routine hump is then key to a successful transition.
The survey has made a few simple suggestions to keep the holiday mood going.
Use technology wisely – the internet allows you to contact others in the same boat and share settlement tips. Forums, blogs and online newspapers also enable you to keep in touch with real time goings on back home.
Make an effort – meet new people and get involved with your local community. A strong support network is essential to a successful emotional transition.
Keep in touch – use social networking sites such as Facebook to have regular contact with family and friends back home.
Move around – take short trips from your new home to avoid becoming stuck in a rut.
Lastly, take things slowly. Absorb the new culture and life rather than throw yourself into a potential culture shock.
