Home Secretary Calls for Rational Debate on Emigration

It bow seems that the Home Secretary, Alan Johnson, has called for a rational debate on emigration to challenge the views of the far right British National Party. Recently in an interview, Alan Johnson acknowledged that Labour may have, in the past, avoided the issue. By doing so, it played into the hands of the British National Party.

Mr. Johnson went on to say that people think that they have shied away from a debate on this subject, and they might be right. However, this is a major public concern right now. The public is entitled to a rational debate on this subject, rather than what they sometimes get.

Right now Alan Johnson believes that emigration has been very good for Britain - both culturally and socially. However, he said that most noticeably it has been helpful to the economy of Britain. He went on to warn that, without a proper public debate on this issue, it leaves the door wide open for the British National Party to make a full run on the issue itself.

Johnson continued by saying that part of its attraction is that it is raising things that other political parties do not raise. It would take the absence of a national debate as the green light to distort the debate. Despite all of this, Mr Johnson made it very clear that he is not prepared to share a public platform with the British National Party to debate the matter at hand. Alan Johnson said that his view is still that he will not share a platform with a fascist, and that has been his view on the matter for over 59 years and does not intend to change it.
