Millionaire West was killed by Nigerian wife in Gambia

Retired computer entrepreneur William West was beaten to death by his young wife, Nigerain Kate Artori. The incident occurred in 2006 at West’s beachfront house in Gambia where Artori apparently bludgeoned him with a cooking pestle before covering him in petrol and setting him alight.

The charred remains of the body were located close to the beach in a bin bag, not far from the four bedroom holiday home the millionaire had purchased in 2000 shortly after meeting Artori.

Artori was finally convicted of the murder on Tuesday, having admitted to the crime in 2006 but later retracting her plea claiming that she had been tortured by police into making the statement.

Artori has been convicted of murder and sentenced to prison for life. The Gambian Police Force spokesman Superintendent Sulayman Secka said that they were satisfied with the decision, claiming that justice has been done.

Artori was just 20-years-old when she married the then 70-year-old West in Edinburgh after meeting him at a beach bar while he was on holiday in Gambia following the death of his first wife Doris. Artori moved in to West’s Hastings home amid concerns from his friends over the marriage.

West purchased the Sanyang resort home following regular visits by the pair. He amended his will in 2005 to leave Artori the Gambian property but later told friends that the couple were to make one last trip where he would ask for a divorce.

It was on that trip that Artori claimed West disappeared on a day trip to Senegal. She was then arrested on her return to Gambia where she claimed that five Nigerian men that she knew had murdered the millionaire and directed police to the remains of the body. She then admitted to the murder and later retracted her claim; however police found no grounds for the retraction.
