Assistant language teaching opportunities in Japan

Japan is a well known destination on the world travel map and has opportunities for assistant teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL).

However, being mindful of the cultural differences between Japan and the UK is essential for those considering a working holiday in the land of the rising sun. As the number of ESL jobs around the world continues to grow Japan is an attractive option for many given the modern lifestyle and decent pay rates.

The number of private tutoring jobs in Japan is overwhelming; with work generally available at any time day or night. Full or part-time teaching contracts can also be found fairly easily and are often advertised through the Japanese English Teachers (JET) programs who offer opportunities to become an Assistant Language Teacher or ALT.

Those considering such opportunities need to understand some of the finer points of Japanese culture as some of the ‘rules’ can be hugely shocking for first timers. Thoroughly researching the position is essential before departure.

The main difference is the concept of face and attempting direct education via questioning which is often met with a less than favorable response.

Correcting Japanese is not appropriate and neither is constructive criticism. Encouragement will always meet with better results. The other common ideal is that the Japanese enjoy a good laugh and expect foreigners to provide it, wittingly or otherwise.

Don’t be surprised if you are asked to sing a song or generally make a public display of yourself, laughing at yourself will build trust and make classes and students much more enjoyable. Watch some of the local TV shows to get an idea of the sense of humour.
