The Map of UK Immigration

A recent BBC release has revealed information proving that recent immigration into the UK now makes up more than half of the growth in Britain’s population over a ten year span. The Institute for Public Policy Research released the latest study of the 2001 Census that shows over a two million population increase that includes about one million people who were born abroad and migrated to the UK.

Tony McNulty said although past immigration has been an asset to the country’s economic success, they did not believe the drastic increase could continue at past levels. He also commented that the immigration situation is complicated by people leaving as well as entering the UK.

The Migration Watch spokesman said they believe there is a general knowledge that immigration will not be able to sustain the current level of growth and they believe the government is overriding the view of the general population. They encourage UK officials to look at promoting immigration into the country in other areas.
The BBC research shows that the vast majority of immigrants into the UK appear to prefer to settle near London or in the south area of England. It also reflects an ever changing image of incoming migrant arrivals from areas such as South America where they think the UK should continue to promote immigration.

Another project - Born Abroad - also provided information on how migrants adjusted to the UK and how well they did working in the country. The project reflected a complex picture that included significant gaps within national groups as well as between them.
