Scotland May Be Favoured by UK Tier Schemes

In a recent interview Trevor Phillips, with the Equality and Human Rights Commission said that a great deal of Britain’s new immigration plans will may indirectly benefit Scotland by allowing more foreigners more choice in where they migrate too and specifically for those who desire to work in Scotland.

Possible migrants must qualify for immigration based on a specific number of points awarded in various areas. The categories for points are divided into five tiers; Tier 1specifically addresses the area of skilled workers. Tier 2 replaces the work permit program that has been in use up to this time.

In the interview Phillips also said that new choices by immigrants could possibly be allowed under a work permit which appears to be included in Tier 2. It would encourage prospective migrants to consider Scotland as a possible migration option. It appears that typically immigrants choose areas close to London as their first immigration location when considering a move to the UK, but that could be changed with the new system in place.

Phillips said the population of some places such as Scotland is aging and these areas will need younger workers to revive the country. He believes the new system could benefit these areas if it is applied in a way that possible migrants might receive extra points for coming to specific areas such as Scotland.

Scotland currently uses a program known as “Fresh Talent” to encourage foreign students enrolled in educational facilities in Scotland to consider staying in the country when their studies are complete.

However, Phillips said the FT system will soon be replaced by a subcategory in Tier 1, also known as “Post Study Work”. When the new Tier 1 is place it will combine the FT system and the International Graduates system into one.
