Skilled Migrants Drawn to UK
The numbers of higher skilled workers considering migrating into the United Kingdom continues to grow. Actually, the number migrating into the UK recently seems to be exceeding the number leaving the country.
This information is from a new study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The report is good news to UK officials who have been alarmed about the high number of skilled residents who seem to be exiting the country.
The study reports over about a million university educated UK citizens are currently living abroad in other developed countries. However, it also states these numbers are overshadowed by increased numbers of migration of highly educated, foreign individuals who have entered the country the past few years under other immigration systems.
The new applied HSMP programs is being given credit for attracting new higher educated immigrants to the UK. It operates from a points system which estimates an applicant’s chances of being able to enter the country based on their age, past earnings, education, and position experience.
The new program is a five tiered system that will replace all past immigration plans related to work, study, or training for non-European nationals.
UK officials have voiced worries about experiencing even larger numbers of UK citizens leaving the country even amid the large numbers of new migrants entering the UK.
The findings also show that high skilled immigrants are significantly better educated than their UK counterparts. About 37 percent of foreign born adults living in Britain are reported to have degrees in higher education, compared to less than 21 percent of the UK native population.
