UK Needs 3,000 Emigrants a Year for Health Care
According to the Oxford University's Center on Emigration, Policy and Society, almost 19 percent of the UK's home and health care workforce is already made up of foreign born workers. Due to the country's aging population, the demand for more foreign health care workers is likely to increase.
The study went on to show that six out of every ten care workers found in London were already emigrants. The co-author of the report, Alessio Cangiano, went on to say that unless the government addresses this problem, there will be an ever growing demand for foreign health care workers. However, most people believe that it is due to the low pay of the sector.
The report does go on to say that the employers need to make sure that these emigrants have access to English language classes. Many of the people that they will be helping are older people who may have a harder time understanding language differences.
Another recommendation by the study stated that if the government was going to continued to rely on emigrants for care workers, it will need to keep the limited emigration entry channel senior care workers. It would also need to monitor the need for long term emigrants.
No announcements have been made on what the government plans to do about this sector of the market or if they will continue to count on emigrant workers to fill in for the lack of British workers.
