Britons Competing With Emigrants For Unskilled Jobs
Due to the recent recession, jobs have been in short supply. This is not just a problem for emigrants, but for Briton white collar workers as well. The recession has caused many office working Britons to have to fight with emigrants for jobs picking fruit on farms.
A very large number of the white collar Britons have been forced to find low paying seasonal jobs that use to be left for the Eastern Europeans to do. This is causing problems, not only for Britons, but for emigrants as well. Many companies who hire for seasonal work say that they have seen a huge surge in the number of applications that have been placed by Britons. This goes for farms, as well as factories. Most of this increase, they go on to say, has happened within the past few weeks.
One such vegetable supplier, Thanet Earth, said that they had 217 apply for jobs. All but three of the people were Britons. The job that everyone was applying for was just minimum wage, which is £5.73 an hour.
Another company, Sharon Cross, that has to fill 1,300 seasonal jobs says that they are normally struggling just to fill their spots. However, now they have people calling up all the time trying to find an opening. The company goes on to say that seasonal jobs are normally not that appealing to Britons, but due to the rescission people are taking what they can get. The company also added that they do not favor one group of people over the other. They hire on a capability basis, not on nationality.
