Immigration arrests raise questions regarding proper procedure

Immigration officers in San Francisco, California are coming under criticism for the way that several arrests related to immigration violations were handled.  Six people including 4 females and 2 males were taken into custody by officials and a seventh person, a 15 year old girl, was questioned at the home where the arrests occurred.

Immigration officials went to the house because it was believe that 3 people who were to be deported were at the home.  During the routine operation the immigration officers discovered that an additional three people living in the room where likely in the country illegally.  The 15 year old is legally in the country.

The arrests of the six adults in the house meant that the young girl was left at the home by herself.  Sophie Maxell who is a supervisor noted that “We’re still investigating.  But as far as I know, the child was left. That’s my concern.  We need to look at the protocol and whether they followed it,” Maxwell said. “This child did not put herself in this situation, and that needs to be looked at.”

A spokesperson for the immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, Virginia Kice, added that protocol was followed.  Kice said that “We would never knowingly leave a minor unattended.”  She also noted that an Aunt came to pick up the girl and that she was supervised while she waited for her Aunt’s arrival.

Regarding the incident Kice also noted that one of the suspects that were arrested tried to attack one of the officers and had to be subdued.  During the process he was “slightly hurt.”
