Immigration reform group in the US comes under attack
An organization in the US that was established a few decades ago has come under attack as being a hate group. The organization is called The Federation for American Immigration Reform. Full page advertisements were put in two major newspapers in the Washington DC area by other groups who are pro immigration. The newspapers are Roll Call and Politico.
A statement released by the organization said that “The ad utterly distorts FAIR’s 30-year record of advocacy on immigration reform and merely parrots previous distortions. Considering how many Americans oppose amnesty and support the enforcement of our immigration laws, this coalition might want to consider whether they wouldn’t simply save themselves time and money and simply call the American public in whole a hate group.”
Included in the advertisement was the question “When Did Extreme Become Mainstream?” Also mentioned was that the organization was “designated as a HATE GROUP by the Southern Poverty Law Center.” Racially suggestive quotes from the founder of FAIR, the President of FAIR and a former Chairman of FAIR were also featured in the advertisement. The advertisement was paid for by multiple groups including Service Employees International Union and America’s Voice.
A website in the advertisement reads “The rhetoric of hate groups, nativists, and vigilantes has taken over the lexicon of the public debate; their policy positions frame the country’s political discourse, and their members have infiltrated the media as well as the ranks of those seeking to lead our country. In short, hate and extremists are defining the debate on immigration — and the portrayal of Hispanic Americans — at every level.”
