Denmark set to challenge European Union’s immigration policies

Denmark has decided to take on the European Union in an attempt to keep its strict immigration policies.  A recent attempt by Ireland was made to keep their immigration laws in place instead of abiding by the laws of the European Union which promotes free movement between countries.  That attempt however was stopped as the European Union claimed its laws were the ones that Ireland needed to follow.

The Prime Minister of Denmark, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said that "Denmark's immigration policy is not going to change; the voters need to know that the law holds.  We're going to the EU to change the rules.  We're trying to change the set of rules inside the EU so that we can get things as we want them.''

The Interior Minister Birthe Roenn Hornbech said about their plans to challenge the European Union that "We've already written to some of our ambassadors and our friends, I've spoken to the EU Commissioner, I've spoken to my French colleague and I'm in the process of writing to other colleagues."

Hornbech also spoke about the impact that the new EU laws saying "We've agreed to free movement of labor in the EU but not the consequences of this principle. When we passed our immigration law in 2002, no one imagined that the EU would go as far as it has.''

Denmark's immigration numbers have been skyrocketing and officials in the country have been looking for was to prevent it growing any further.
