Man seeking asylum in the UK worries about returning home
Antonio Nunes who has been living in the UK since 1997 was taken from his home last week and put into an Immigration Removal Center. Nunes fled from his native Angola because of political unrest at the time. Nunes is seeking asylum in the UK and claims he fears for his own safety if he were deported back to Angola.
A battle is raging in Angola over a region called Cabinda. This region has been fighting for its independence and Nunes was involved in a group that supported that mission. He claims that because of his association with the group he is being persecuted.
Amnesty International spoke of the dangers in Angola: “Unarmed civilians are being extra-judicially executed and tortured in the context of a little known war in Cabinda. The authorities have consistently failed to prevent abuses and bring the perpetrators to justice. Amnesty International is appealing to the government to restore full protection for human rights.”
Nunes spoke from the immigration center: “I have mixed feelings - all the trouble I have been through recently makes me feel like going. But when I hear the stories of people being arrested when they arrive in Angola, it makes me feel very worried. People are being killed in indiscriminately. It would be very dangerous for me to return to Angola. You must never speak about or get involved in politics - if you do, as I have done, you never know what will happen.”
