Spain down to third most popular emigration destination among brits

Spain is no longer the most popular destination among emigrating Brits, with both Australia and the US leapfrogging the Iberian country in the latest statistics on UK citizens relocating.

The Mediterranean nation has long since been the most common place for Brits to emigrate to, with its climate being a major pull factor. Also a key reason why people from Blighty opt for Spain is its close proximity to home, with expats able to move between the countries relatively cheaply and at a drop of a hat should any kind of emergency occur.

All this means that it is somewhat surprising that Australia and the US, which now fill the top two spots respectively, have moved above Spain in terms of popularity.

Between 2009 and 2014, 207,000 Brits packed their bags and moved down under, while a further 80,000 headed Stateside in pursuit of the American Dream.
In comparison, only 52,000 UK nationals relocated to Spain over the same five-year period, a fall of 124,000 from the five years beforehand.
