Latest New Zealand statistics offer snapshot of Kiwi life

The annual New Zealand statistical report gives a useful guide to would-be expats hoping to head for a new life on the opposite side of the world.

Statistics New Zealand’s annual report acts as a shop window for the country, by detailing average prices of everyday needs, the feelings of Kiwi nationals and the options as regards location for those looking to emigrate. For example, over the last year, milk has been cheaper and beer more expensive!

According to leading statistician Carol Slappendel, everything from population density through trade data and labour force information is found in Profile 2014. Other commodities seeing price increases include apples, fish and chip suppers, fish and lamb, and the publication isnt’ just about food prices as it covers environmental changes, the economy and the people themselves.

Meanwhile, the results of the 2013 census highlight the changes which have taken place in Christchurch since the earthquakes three years ago. Greater Christchurch now has many more empty homes, and demographics have changed, with more young men and people of Maori descent than ever before in the city.

Many residents moved out after the earthquakes and, although some have moved back, a good number have moved on. Increased immigration from Ireland, India and the Philippines was noted and, unsurprisingly, construction is now the city’s largest industry and many jobs have moved from the central districts to the suburbs.
