New Zealand issues new rules for international students

Under the recently-issued new visa and employment rules, overseas students arriving to study in New Zealand will find it easier to work whilst continuing their education.

The visa/work package, unveiled yesterday by the New Zealand government, is aimed at attracting more international students to the country’s further education and language institutes. The main incentive offered is that students will now be allowed to work during course breaks as well as during the summer period.

Doctorate and research-based masters’ degree students will be permitted to work full-time during the allowed periods, whilst those studying the English language will be able to find part-time jobs. Another advantage of the new scheme is that it allows universities as well as selected polytechnics and some private education providers to partner with Immigration New Zealand in prioritising and streamlining visa applications.

In order to maintain the quality of the country’s education offerings to overseas students, applicants for places at Category 4 establishments will no longer be granted study visas. Category C is the lowest educational status granted by the country’s qualifications authority, and is given to a handful of education providers aiming mainly at international students.

Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse told the media that the government is keen to attract more overseas students, adding that the new visa scheme will ensure the highest quality of education is received. Pastoral care for international students is also due for an upgrade involving new laws to protect incoming students from rogue education providers and visa racketeers.
