Italy and France Ask European Union to Suspend Schengen Commitments

Right now, immigration is a big problem everywhere. Not just in America and the UK, but in many parts of Europe. Just recently Italy and France called upon the European Union to change their Schengen agreement. This is the same agreement that allows visa free movement across 25 different European nations. This is a scheme that France and Italy both feel is not particle right now.

The French government said that the governance over Schengen is failing right now. Thus, other nations need to reflect on certain rulings in case there is a systemic failure of an external border. It should be left this way until the weakness is finally corrected.

Although France and Italy might think this is a good idea, any move to suspend such movements from Schengen is going to be viewed as highly controversial. After all, this would be a big switch since the Schengen agreement does currently allow border free travel across 25 different union states.

So why does Italy and France want this done all of a sudden? Most of it is because these two countries want the European Union to help all the European nations that are currently struggling to deal with the big influx of migrants that are trying to flee places in North Africa.

Of course, France is not on good terms right now with Italy in relation to this Schengen pact. This is because France says that Italy is abusing the pact by allowing some 25,000 migrants from North Africa land in Italy – ost of which are French-speaking people. Most of the people who stay in Italy are just using it as a starting point as they try to reach their friends and family located in France.
