Australia offers hope for out of work construction workers in Britain
As construction companies located in Britain have had to lay off several thousand workers over the last couple of months there is hope for employment in Australia. As the Australian economy is growing stronger the demand for construction has increased.
To compensate for their need the Australian government has altered the rules that apply to its Second Working Holiday Visa. This will allow construction workers in Britain that have worked in the construction industry for at least three months and are between the ages of 18 and 30 to enter Australia on an extended visa that will allow them to stay in the country for up to two years.
The general manager for Tourism Australia, Rodney Harrex, said “There are lots of opportunities in regional Australia to work in construction and with the slowdown of this industry in the UK, now is the perfect time for 18-30-year-olds to consider living and working Down Under. These visa changes come on the back of the success of the initial extension of the Working Holiday Visa which saw youngsters being eligible to apply for an additional year if they worked for three months doing seasonal work such as shearing sheep or packing fruit.”
Other industries that this visa could be extended to over time include carpentry, electricians, and plumbing. It will also be necessary for the applicant who is applying for the visa to be located outside of Australia at the time the application is submitted and accepted.
