New Zealand looking to shake up immigration department

With the recent controversy and scandal that has been surrounding the immigration department in New Zealand the national party is making a point to change the format and layout of department if they are able to win their way into the government. Their plan is to remove the immigration services function out of the Labor department and create a new department so that it can be on its own.

The main drive for this is the recent scandal surrounding Mary Anne Thompson who held a senior position in the immigration department before it was found out that her resume was not creditable. The situation is still under investigation and more charges are expected for those involved with the cover up.  New Zealand’s Labour minister Trevor Mallard commented on the situation and the proposal for the creation of a new department for immigration “I think it points out the need for the head of immigration New Zealand to actually be at chief executive level.”

Mallard believes that many of the problems that currently exist in the immigration department are tied to the fact that many of the positions are appointments instead of going through the process required for a full chief executive position. He further commented “Everything from full ministerial accountability on has been compromised by the fact you have not got the normal relationship between a chief executive and the minister because the head of immigration New Zealand is not actually a chief executive.”
