Experts say Many Emigrant Workers in the UK Are Just Modern Day Slaves
Reports go on to suggest that foreign domestic workers are living as slaves in Britain. They are being abused, not only sexually, but psychologically as well. Many employers are forcing their female emigrant workers to preform sexual acts on them, and there is nothing that the emigrant worker can do about it.
Studies suggest that there are more than 15,000 emigrant workers that come to Britain every year to earn money to send back to their families. However, according to some reports, many of these workers endure conditions that are less than flattering and can only be called modern day slavery.
One charity based in west London, Kalayaan, helps and gives advice to emigrant workers. They get up to some 350 new workers each year. About 20 percent of them report being physically abused or assaulted. Some say they have been burnt with irons, and some have been threatened with knives. Some even said that they have had boiling water thrown on them.
Jenny Moss, a community advocate for the charity, said that two-thirds of domestic workers are reporting that they are psychologically abused at their workplace. That means that they are threatened and humiliated, shouted at and called dogs. A similar proportion of people even say that they are not allowed out alone and have never had a day off of work. Almost three quarters of them say that they are paid less than £50 a week.
