President Chavez disagrees with European Union rules regarding immigration

The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, has called the new policies by the European Union regarding immigrants “barbaric.”  The strict immigration policy announced by the European Union is opposite that of South American policies that encourage travel between countries without the use of a passport and who are full or associate members of Mercosur.  This includes Argentina, Brazi, Paraguay, and Uruguay and most of South America with the exception of the Guyanas.

At the summit for the Mercosur trade block memebers condemned the European Union policy by passing a resolution against it.  President Hugo Chavez said “We need a strong stance… in defense of the dignity of our people” and that “Civilized Europe has legalized barbarism.”

Some of the details of the new immigration policy announced by the European Union include banning those who violate the rules from Europe for up to five years.  Also those who are found in Europe to be violating immigration policy can be detained in jail for up to 18 months before officially being deported.

President Chavez is urging action against both the United States and the European Union for their tough policies by stating “Truly we cannot remain quiet.  We cannot limit ourselves to just protesting as we have.  It is necessary to seek a common stance.”  President of Uruguay Tabare Vazquez joined Chavez by saying “It hurts us deeply that there is no respect for the human rights of Latin American immigrants, who had to leave and seek elsewhere what they don’t have in their own lands - just like their grandparents did.”
