Family Detention Center At Yarl's Wood to be Shut Down

According to new reports, the family detention center at Yarl's Wood is to be shut down. Nick Clegg went on to describe this facility as a moral outrage. It is well known that this center detains some 1,000 children a year.

Children's charities and campaigners, of course, welcomed the government's announcement that this wing of Yarl's Wood would be closed. Nick Clegg went on to tell the House of Commons that it was a moral outrage that previous governments locked up children who were innocent of any wrong doing in the first place.

A spokesman for the Outcry campaign, which is made up of the Children's Society and Bail for Emigration detainees, said that the OutCry campaign has repeatedly condemned the practice of emigration detention of children. This can cause serious harm to kids' mental and physical health.

He went on to say that they believe that locking up kids, who have committed no kind of crime, is unacceptable in Britain in the 21st century. Many of these kids are locked up for months at a time. This commitment is a huge step in the right direction.

The director of policy for the human rights group Liberty, Isabella Sankey, said that the Yarl's Wood family unit is a notorious contradiction in terms. Here children are incarcerated and mothers are driven to despair. Liberty looks forward to the government's plans to close this unit.

The Home Office later went back to clarified a few matters. It said that that it was only the family wing of the 405 bed facility that was to be closed. The rest of the center would continue to function as normal.
