Officials Still Worried About Emigration Cap
Director of policies at the British Chambers of Commerce, Dr Adam Marshall, said that firms really need to be able to employ the right kind of people to drive the recovery of the country. They should not be held back by arbitrary limits. He went on to say that member businesses he has spoken to recognize that there is a strong desire to limit emigration. Of course, they also know there is a strong need to ensure competitiveness.
Damian Green, who is the emigration minister, said that the country needs to recognize the importance of attracting the brightest and the best people to ensure a strong economic growth period. However, unlimited emigration places unacceptable pressure on public services. This is a pressure that the UK cannot take right now.
The last UK government that was in place introduced a points based system that prevented unskilled workers from coming into the UK from outside the European Union. This was unless they worked in an area that was identified as having a shortage.
The senior researcher at the Institute for Public Policy Research, Sarah Mulley, said that highly skilled workers were not the group that the public is concerned about. There is a risk of serious harm to the economy if these people are stopped from coming into the country.
As of right now this cap on emigration is a touchy subject. Some people are scared about the harm that will come from the emigration cap, and others are worried about what will happen if no cap is put in place. Thus, it is a very urgent issue in the country right now.
