Nigerian Asylum Seeker Now Faces Deportation After Assaulting Drunk Schoolgirl

It now appears that a Nigerian asylum seeker is to be interviewed by emigration officials after he was sentenced at the Crown Court in Derry for assaulting a intoxicated 15-year-old schoolgirl. Apparently the man had assaulted the girl back in May of last year.

Victor Ibeyo, the 42-year-old emigrant, lives at River View in Letterkenny. He had first denied the charge, as well as further charges of falsely imprisoning, abducting and touching the schoolgirl in a sexual manner. However, those charges were placed on the court file, not to be proceeded with without the leave of the court or Appeal Court, after he admitted the assault charge.

Judge Piers Grant was later told that the assault offense occurred when Ibeyo leaned across the girl who was a passenger in the front of his car at the time. He was doing this to open the car door for the girl. It was at this point that the girl got out of the car and stumbled due to the amount of alcohol that she had consumed. This included four Vodkas and a number of alcopops.

The prosecution barrister said that Ibeyo had been in custody since his arrest for the offense thirteen months ago. She said that Ibeyo has no previous convictions of any kind and was not considered by the police to be of any danger to the general public.

The defense barrister noted that one of Ibeyo's four children had been born while he was in custody and he had yet to see his baby. Ibeyo, who left home when he was just 12, came to Dublin in 2006 and had worked various odd jobs. She also noted that Ibeyo cannot be blamed for this girl consuming the alcohol. She was a girl that should not have been out on the streets late at night drinking anyway.
