In order to help combat the growing number of immigrants who have stayed long past their visa expiration British government had been considering imposing some form of cash charge or bond to help increase the likelihood that the immigrant would leave when their time was due. Liam Bryne who is the immigration minister for Britain commented that the government has taken a change of heart and has decided against pursuing the plan which has received many protests and negative press from many foreign nations.
New immigration policy for Britain was working to introduce cash expense to make it harder for immigrants to overstay their visa. The cash incentives was part of a bigger policy that is now requiring any foreigner trying to gain access to Britain who does not currently reside in a European nation to be sponsored by a family or friend of a Brit. The sponsor would need to put up the bond to ensure they took responsibility for the visitor’s passage back home. While the bond was decided to be left out of the policy, if a sponsor fails to have their foreign guest return before their visa expires they can face penalties that include up to fourteen years in prison or five thousand pounds in fines.
While the financial burden to sponsor a foreigner has been dropped other plans to ensure the host is adequately intentioned will be enforced. These protective measures include criminal background checks, immigration checks as well as financial.
