Canada to stop recruiting UK police
In attempt to bring in more experienced police officers Canada started to recruit from various United Kingdom agencies starting two years ago. The recruitment was a success as many Brits took up the offer to emigrate for a new life doing the same job in ‘Canada. Staff Sergeant Skelton commented about the success of the program “There is a lot of Canadian police agencies fishing out of that pool. It is hard to ignore that kind of experience.”
The program was so successfully in trying to recruit from the United Kingdom that currently twelve percent of all applications that the Canadian police receive originate from out of Canada where the majority starts in the United Kingdom. Skelton also commented about the success, “We found we were successful more than we even imagined. Right now we are taking a moment to slow down and catch our breath.”
The current size of the police force in Calgary which is heading up the program is 1700 where the number of those officers who had immigrated from foreign soil falls between two hundred and three hundred. With the experience now in the force thanks to the success of the program, they have decided to discontinue taking on more applications and to turn their focus to Canadian born and raised officers. Sergeant Skelton commented “Right now we are focusing our efforts on trying to recruit local people.”
The program was successful thanks to a policy that existed which helped move the immigration process quickly in order to get law enforcement officers from foreign soil into Canada quicker then normal.
