Illegal Emigrants Use Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One Convoy to Sneak into the UK
There were five illegal emigrants, believed to be from Eritrea in northern Africa. They were all arrested shortly after being discovered at Biggin Hill Airport in Kent. This happens to be the area where the Ecclestone's Formula One Management company is based.
The trucks were returning four days after the sixth race of the F1 season in Monte Carlo on May 16th. The illegal emigrants must have climbed on board in Calais, France. Had they not been found, they could have joined the estimated 725,000 other illegal emigrants that are already living in the UK.
A spokesman for FOM said just this week that one of their trucks, which was returning from Monaco Grand Prix in the port area of Calais, seems to have picked up five illegal stowaways who went undiscovered until the truck got back to their base in England. When they got back to England, the driver was shocked to discover them in a curtain side truck. They had clearly been assisted, because the curtain had been secured back down from the outside.
The spokesperson went on to say that they follow the guidelines set by the UK Border Agency, and they train their drivers in ways to check and how to protect their vehicles from illegal emigrants. The log of the driver shows that he did everything that they ask of him.
