It now appears that NRIs are not very happy with the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat government. This is because the new British government will probably come down very hard on emigration and introduce economic policies that help the rice. Also, it is said that the Tories normally come down hard on people from India.

It is estimated that 2.5 million Asians voted for the Tories and Liberal Democrats. The rich Hindu NRIs usually voted for the Conservatives to protect their business interests. Muslims, who were angry over the British invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, voted for the Conservatives. From a record number of 89 Asian candidates, including 30 from the Conservatives, 18 have been elected.

Jolly Seth, a businessman in Leicester, said that what people are seeing now is a change in the Asian voting pattern. Traditionally, they have been Labour supporters. However, now the Liberal Democrats are pulling in a lot of Asian support, especially from the young professionals. Mostly, Asian businesspeople did not vote Labour, as they feel they are suffering because of their policies. The working class are unemployed, and they blamed the Labour government.

Shamlal Puri, who is a London-based journalist and author, said that the Labour party traditionally had a soft spot for Asian candidates, as they lay great value on the Asian vote. Conservatives are not pro Asian in many ways and just give lip service to capture the Asian vote. He went on to say that the Conservatives are seen as pro white with little to contribute to the Asian diaspora in the UK. However, the Tories took note of this and now have thrown an olive branch to the minorities.
