Skilled Australians can take an extra year in UK

Starting at the end of June, the new immigration point system in the United Kingdom will allow for Australian workers who are highly skilled to stay for an extra year after their current visa expires. The current visa program allows highly skilled individuals to stay for a period of two years with a visa but to off set their shrinking population the UK government is looking to extend the highly skilled Australians stay. “This scheme is about matching people with skills, with the skills the British economy needs,” commented Clive Hunton who is a communication director with British high commission.

The area that is most in need for highly skilled workers was not made clear by Hunton who commented that an individual who held a masters in arts had the same chance to extend their residency in the UK for another year as much as a person who had their degree in science. The point system assigns points to those looking to emigrate based on many factors including age, earning and English skills. Australians who are completing the application will automatically be given the highest amount of points possible for the language sections.

The UK is a popular destination for Australians looking to move. In 2007, 30,757 Australians were given visas to the United Kingdom and of those roughly one thousand qualified as highly skilled. The remaining visas were for those traveling for a working holiday, students as well as dependants.
