Emigration Becomes Taboo Subject in Britain

Right now, in the UK, the economy is still seen as the main point of interest for voters in the general election. However, another very closely related issue is not something that a lot of people go around talking about. Many Brits admit that they feel that emigration is a subject that is hard to discuss without sounding racist.

During the years of the economic boom, there was a big influx of people to Britain to fill the many jobs that were available at that time. Between 1997 and 2009, the working population born abroad almost doubled to 14 percent. However, there are some that feel this figure is just way too high.

One source went on to say that not only are emigrants coming in from Eastern European countries, but worldwide. People seem to realize, at the end of the day, Britain is a soft target. Another woman went on to describe her difficulty talking about the subject. She said that when people talk about emigration, they are called racist – just like Gordon Brown the other day. Thus, people dare not mention it too much.

However, the woman does speak the truth. When Prime Minister Gordon Brown called a voter a bigot after she voiced concerns about emigration, it was crystal clear that this issue was taboo. Thus, the three main parties have been very reluctant to confront the issue at hand. They may have to become more vocal if this issue is going to be addressed properly. Opinion polls show that it is the second biggest concern among the voters. It is ahead of health, crime and even education.
