Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg Angry Over Attacks on Emigration Policy
However, Mr Clegg said that it makes him incredibly angry that David Cameron and Gordon Brown have created a problem. They are perfectly happy to turn a deaf ear to criminal gangs running amok in the community. Clegg says that he is the only leader that actually wants to do something about it.
The issues involving emigration have been raised throughout the campaign and were the subject of a question in each of the three leaders' debates. In the final televised showdown, Mr Cameron claimed that 600,000 illegal emigrants could be given the right to remain and bring a family member into the UK under the Liberal Democrats proposal.
Mr Clegg went on to speak to reporters at the event and told them that his opponents have wholly misrepresent his plan. He said that, given that neither David Cameron nor Gordon Brown want to actually clear up the mess they created, they do not want to be honest with anyone. He went on to say that he thinks it's right that the Liberal Democrats are saying that they got to do something about this. Clegg said that he just wants to go after the criminal gangs and clean up the streets.
The Liberal Democrats proposal does give illegal emigrants, who can prove that they've been in the UK for 10 years and can speak English, the right to a free citizenship. However, this comes with a period of community service.
