Emigrant Rapist Escapes Deportation to Stay in the UK and Get Married

According to new reports, an emigrant who raped a women has escaped deportation after winning a High Court battle to stay in Britain to get married. The refugee, Alphonse Semo, is from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Just this week Alphonse did win the right to stay in Britain to marry his long term partner. He won the right to stay in Britain just two hours before he was due to board a plane back to Africa. Mr Justice Collins said that it was difficult to have any sympathy for Semo, but he has been allowed to stay.

The judge went on to say that the Home Office had agreed to let Semo, age 53, get married to a German national. Then the wedding was canceled by a subsequent decision by the same Home Office. The judge said that he was very reluctant to intervene, but the Home Office cannot be allowed to play hot and cold with emigrants.

It was at this point that the judge said, with considerable reluctance, that he feels that Semo must be allowed to marry. This means that there will be a prohibition against removing him from the UK. Mr Justice Collins said that Home Secretary Alan Johnson would have to reconsider later, after Semo is married, whether to make another attempt to deport him or not.

If Mr Johnson makes a bid to deport Semo later on, it will involve European Union laws as Semo's bride, Busana Kalonji, is a German national. Ms Kalonji is in the UK exercising her rights to work there under the European Union law.

Semo is the same refugee who, back in 2002, was sentenced to eight years in prison for raping and assaulting a woman. Thus, his refugee stats were revoked in June of 2008, and the Home Secretary made a deportation order.
