US Companies hoping for change for workers
Currently the H1B work visa policy is designed to provide immigrants the ability to come to the US for a period of no longer than 6 years that fall into the high skill category. Those students who have come to the US from foreign countries can also stay using their student visa upon graduation for a period of twenty nine months to work at a company in the US while their employers can fill out the H1B visa to keep them longer. The H1B work visa policy however has a limit each year of only 85,000 and of that 20,000 require education beyond bachelors. In many years the limit is reached within the first few days of consideration due to the large number of applications that are submitted.
Mind Over Machines CEO Thomas Loveland commented on the limit placed on the visas, “We need those workers. There are all kinds of high tech jobs in Maryland that go unfilled and its going to get more challenging in Maryland with the jobs coming here.” Those in favor of increasing the limit to allow more foreign high skilled workers to enter the US have been lobbying with different candidates such as McCain and Obama in order to push their point. However, many against the idea of increasing the number of foreign workers in the United States have worked to stop any progress in the area including filing a lawsuit which would block student extensions in the state of New Jersey. The group who filed the lawsuit, Programmers Guide and American Engineering Association commented, “It’s a fiction that the United States suffers a shortage of skilled labor.”
