Cancun could be deadly to Cuban illegal immigrants

Within the last year there have been 3 Cubans who have been murdered in Cancun officially with the number expected to be much higher. The 3 murdered Cubans were all separate cases with no relationship. The Mexican officials who were involved with researching the cases have concluded that the crimes were more than likely tied to human smuggling. Cancun is often used as a stepping stone for those Cuban citizens who are trying to escape the communist nation. Located only 120 miles away from Cuba,  Cancun has been used as one of the many points of entry. Once inside Mexico borders, many of the illegal immigrants head north to try to cross in the United States. In fact, the United States Government has announced that over eleven thousand Cubans have entered into the United States and Mexican borders in just the year 2007.

In addition to the eleven thousand that have managed to cross the border, another thirteen hundred have been stopped by being arrested by the Mexican police this year alone. This number is on pace to break last years which had the Mexican police detaining over thirty three hundred Cubans who had illegally entered their country. Once captured in Mexico, officials contact the Cuban government to see if they can be returned back to the island nation based on their criminal history. If they can not return, they are given travel papers and forced to leave Mexico.  This agreement will be reviewed again later this year.
